New York CNN —Wayfair is laying off 1,650 employees, amounting to 13% of its global workforce, as the online home goods retailer struggled to rebound following its success amid pandemic lockdowns. “I believe we need to stay focused as a company on what committed small teams can accomplish,” Shah wrote Friday. All workers will receive an email Friday about their future with the company and severance will be offered to those affected. Late last year, Wayfair’s Shah garnered attention for his blunt year-end letter to his employees telling them to blend work and life together. Shah also encouraged Wayfair employees to think of the company money they spend as their own and negotiate prices.

Wayfair is cutting 13% of its global workforce as the digital home goods retailer looks to trim down its structure, cut out layers of management and reduce costs, it announced Friday. The company plans to lay off around 1,650 employees, including 19% of its corporate team, with a focus on people in management and leadership positions, the company said. The restructuring – the third Wayfair has implemented since summer 2022 – is expected to save the company about $280 million, it said. The layoffs come after Hasbro , Etsy and Macy's all announced cuts to their workforces as retailers contend with slowing demand and an uncertain economy. As a result, Wayfair has needed to make cuts to ensure its staffing levels are proportionate to how much business it's doing.

New York CNN —Sears’ last-remaining store in the New York metro area is closing, bringing the number of Sears locations still in existence down to about a dozen. Following the shuttering of the Jersey City location, the closest Sears for the New York metro area shoppers is 227 miles away in Braintree, Massachusetts. Now, there are only just over a dozen Sears remaining in the continental US. Sears is owned by hedge fund operator Eddie Lampert’s company Transformco. Freight prices are set to jump Monday, while longer transit times around Africa are disrupting and delaying deliveries of products. British clothing retailer Next recently warned of stock delays as a result of the longer ocean transit. "This creates strong motivations for ocean carrier(s) to increase rate(s) by establishing General Rate Increases (GRIs), Peak Season Surcharge (PSSs), and other contingency or emergency surcharges," the company said. "HLS warned Transpacific freight rates could spike to highs not seen since early 2022, with the Suez Canal route suspended, and the Panama Canal route restricted." The Stanley cup hype has reached new heights with its limited edition Valentine's Day drop at Target. AdvertisementStanley has just released its limited edition Valentine's Day cups — the Galentine's Day collection — and customers are stampeding Target stores to get their own. Other TikTokers captured the lines — reminiscent of Black Friday — outside several Target stores in the early morning hours before the cups were unveiled. But the chaos captured in these viral videos could also be, in part, a result of how profitable the resale market for them has become — especially for limited edition colors of its largest tumblers. Within days of its release, listings on eBay and Poshmark showed the red and pink cups going for over $100.

Hong Kong CNN —Alibaba founder Jack Ma has called for “change” as the stellar performance of a competitor causes a stir at his e-commerce company. On Wednesday, the billionaire responded to a recent rally in the stock of PDD (PDD), the group behind Chinese online shopping giant Pinduoduo and US-based retail upstart Temu. That has pushed up the company’s stock in New York dramatically, taking it 18% higher Tuesday and another 2% higher Wednesday. As a result, PDD’s market cap has soared to $188.3 billion, putting it just below Alibaba’s (BABA) $189.9 billion. I believe that everyone in Alibaba today is watching and listening,” he wrote in a comment, according to the source.

How China's Shein became a fast-fashion giant

A Shein logo is pictured at the company's office in the central business district of Singapore, October 18, 2022. REUTERS/Chen Lin/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 28 (Reuters) - China-founded fashion company Shein has confidentially filed to go public in the United States, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday. Shein says the approach has helped it consistently achieve average unsold inventory rates in the low single digits. At that valuation, Shein would still trail Uniqlo owner Fast Retailing's (9983.T) $80 billion valuation and Zara owner Inditex's (ITX.MC) $126 billion. Shein moved its headquarters to Singapore from Nanjing, capital of China's eastern Jiangsu province, around late 2021, a shift that analysts said helps the firm circumvent China's tough new rules on overseas listings.

The Singapore-based company has not determined the size of the deal or the valuation at IPO. The online fast-fashion retailer, which manufactures most of its merchandise in China, faces criticism that Uyghur forced labor is used to make its low-priced apparel and home goods. Earlier this year, the congresswoman led a bipartisan call for the SEC to halt Shein’s IPO until it verifies that the company does not use forced labor within its supply chain. Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the company has previously told Reuters it has “zero tolerance for forced labor” and has no contract manufacturers in Xinjiang. Shein's IPO is "going to be raising issues (for the SEC) that may later be applied across the board to all China-based or China-related companies that are going public," Penick said.
